Case Studies
Here are a number of case studies of projects carried out by XML Workshop Ltd. to assist clients in preparing and publishing information online and in print.
Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment
The Department wished to upgrade its website to comply with the WAI Accessibility Guidelines, and also to make the website easy to maintain. They chose Microsoft Word and YAWC Pro as the content maintenance solution, and XMLW converted their existing HTML pages into Word format, marked them up to WAI Level 2 (AA) compliance, and defined a web template to enable delegated staff members to maintain each area of the website (http://www.entemp.ie/).
Comhairle
Comhairle wished to enable a variety of external writers to create content for the OASIS website (Online Access to State Information and Services) in a structured way. XMLW helped define an XML DTD, and developed a Word template with custom styles, and a corresponding VBA macro to convert documents submitted by writers into XML. Further editing was carried out using XMetaL to add metadata, before the content was published online in HTML format on OASIS.
Irish Farmers Journal
The Irish Farmers Journal Online Services team wished to publish daily livestock factory price and mart report information online on their website in HTML format, and also deliver the same information to WAP-enabled mobile phones. For factory prices, XMLW developed a HTML form to accept tab-delimited text from an Excel spreadsheet, which was then converted into HTML tables for web delivery, and WML (Wireless Markup Language) linear format for mobile delivery.
Davy Stockbrokers
Davy Stockbrokers wished to prepare a Weekly Book of Irish stock market information, consisting of narrative text contributed by analysts, and tabular financial data generated from a database in XML format. XMLW developed software to convert and structure the data into an XML format (with embedded style information), which QuarkXPress could import and automatically format, saving hours of manual DTP work.
